Jefferson County Clock Tower

Project Manager: Rob Owens
Superintendent: Bob Wisner

In 2006 Drury Construction began the seismic restoration and retrofit of The Jefferson County Courthouse Clock Tower. The Clock Tower was originally opened in 1892 and is a National Historic Landmark as well as the cornerstone of Port Townsend’s Victorian architecture district. During routine inspections in 1998 the interior condition of the un-reinforced masonry construction of the tower was noted to show deterioration. The clock tower suffered additional nonstructural damage during the February 2001 Nisqually earthquake.

Drury Construction had work on each floor and to the peak of the building which stands approximately 135’. Scaffold was installed from the 7th floor to the top of the clock face so work could be accessed. The tower was stabilized by drilling six-inch diameter holes in each of the four corners from the four turrets which were then filled with an epoxy grout and 1” diameter rebar. Floors 4 to 7 were replaced; exterior and interior bricks were restored. The clock works and clock face were also repaired and the bell became operational again. The courthouse remained in operation during the project.
