Fort Worden Dining Facility and Conference Center Project Manager: Rick Cadwell The Washington State Park Department completed its largest building ever - a 19,000 square foot dining hall and conference center constructed by Drury Construction Co. at Fort Worden in Port Townsend, Washington. The $4.5 million project includes a reception/lobby area, coffee shop and four dining rooms that can be combined to serve 600 guests. Fort Worden was constructed in the mid-1800s to guard the entrance to Puget Sound. The State Park Department sought a conference center to blend with the older, simple painted wood military buildings on the site. The building consists of several gables sections with interconnecting flat roof areas. The roof, windows, columns and exterior details tie to nearby historic buildings. Interior spaces differ from the more controlled exterior, with high ceilings, skylights, open trusses and metal finishes that reflect the fort’s gun emplacement history. |
