Eagle Harbor Church Steeple
Bainbridge Island, Washington
Project Manager: Brian Russell
Superintendent: Chuck Fryer
The refurbishment of the Eagle Harbor Congregational Church steeple involved
removing the steeple so it could be repaired at ground level. The steeple was
reinforced with rods and beams so it could be carefully set on the ground in
order to be repaired. Once on the ground, everything below the roof was rebuilt
to match the existing structure and the roof was reshingled. Church volunteers
assisted in the work, they even provided new trim, some of which they made
themselves. The original bell was refurbished by a Port Townsend company and a
second town bell was added. The steeple was then hoisted back up and secured
into place.
The church steeple is a Winslow landmark that is featured in many calendars,
post cards and tourism brochures. It was added a few years after the church was
built in 1896. The congregation was able to raise the money for the project
through their “Save our Steeple” campaign. The second bell that was added to the
tower was dedicated to the church’s non members who made donations. Drury
Construction was able to finish the project for about 30% less than the original
contract.
