West Sound human resource management professionals recognized seven Kitsap area businesses for their exemplary work/life policies and practices that improve employee performance, strengthen families, and benefit the community. Winners of the West Sound Work/Life Award for 2002 are: Drury Construction Company; Kitsap Credit Union; Edgren, Hecker & Lemmon Insurance; Fred Hill Materials; Paladin Data Systems Corporation; Longs Drug Stores; and The Olympic Area Agency on Aging.
Work/life policies are those policies, developed by employers, to help employees effectively balance work and personal responsibilities to improve or maintain productivity. Some examples are flextime, job sharing, elder/child care assistance, telecommuting, alternative work schedules, employee assistance programs, wellness programs, and drug free workplace programs.
The West Sound Work/Life Award presentation was organized by the Work/Life Community Partnership and the West Sound Human Resource Management Association (WSHRMA). It was co-sponsored by the Bremerton Chamber of Commerce, the Silverdale Chamber of Commerce and the Kitsap Business Journal.
The seven organizations receiving the awards for 2002 completed a written application, which was reviewed by the Work/Life Award Selection Committee. Employee testimonials explaining the ways in which their employer’s work/life practices have enhanced both their work and personal lives also played a significant role in the selection process.
Employee testimonials from Drury Construction illustrated how their company’s work/life practices support one of their company’s stated core values: “[to] be the most sought-after place of employment and provide a stimulating work environment for our employees.” Employees praised Drury Construction for accommodating changing schedules, offering flexible hours for working parents, providing loans to assist employees facing financial crises, helping employees secure additional work elsewhere when not needed full-time, and donating computers to employees’ children to use for homework.
